Anita Vallabh

Why I dance

I am a seeker of the knowledge and wisdom underpinning Indian dance traditions. In weaving its spoken and unspoken elements I am empowered to render universal significance to my poetic experience. Hence, I dance.

About Anita Vallabh

For me, the expressive medium of Bharatanāṭyam combined with the ethical principles of yoga, enables a stronger, deeper and more expansive engagement with life and art.

In the 38 years of my career as a teacher, I am driven to inspire and challenge every student's potential for creativity.

As a performer and researcher, I have been privileged to travel around the world, conduct workshops and present papers at conferences. The experiences, observances and interaction with fellow artists has helped my creative self to evolve.

About Anita Vallabh

Dance to me is an
authentic expression
of who I am and
who I can become.

You Are Your Desires

Very simply written, this slim volume draws from the author's own life and that of the people around her, to offer significant insights into simple life philosophies. A touching book and one that you will refer to again and again, especially when you need guidance. It is for everyone.

Abhinaya Darpanam: Mudrā-s: Single Hand Gestures

For dance students, the book is a great way to get in touch with dance in a creative way other than through training. I have also given the book to children who have no relation to Indian dance. They are particularly fascinated by telling stories with their hands, and they try out their own versions of hand gestures.
