Natya Yoga Siksa

A methodology of training embodying principles of yoga in the teaching and practice of dance

Objective

01

To focus on the spiritual aspect of natya traditions guided by yogic principles.

02

To create a safe and healthy environment for dancers to engage, educate and elevate the mind to a state of peace and wellbeing.

Why learn by the Nātya Yoga Śikṣā methodology?

The Nātya Yoga Śikṣā method will help you develop a personal movement practice that will calm the fluctuations in the mind ( thoughts and feelings ) so you can experience your authentic self. Performing artists create their content in different ways: by observing or by their experience of the external world, by interpreting traditional texts in a manner relevant to the context in which they were written, or by reinterpreting the same for the present times.

The intense creative process beginning from ideation to its birth is a messy and unsettling process that leaves the dancers often vulnerable and seeking validation from the outside.

About Nātya Yoga Śikṣā methodology

The classical traditions of Natya ( performing arts ) and yoga are fundamentally experiential disciplines that integrate the gross and subtle aspects of the mind, body and spirit.. When principles of yoga are applied to the practice of dance, a dancer engages with the world around with equanimity, becomes mindful of the subtle realms of the breath and mind and experiences the stillness within.

The principal guidelines for this methodology are taken from the second chapter of the Yogasūtras, where Patañjali outlines the five Yamas or observances: Non-Violence, Truth, Non-stealing, Moderation and Non-possessiveness.

You can learn more about this method through our workshops.

Who is this meant for?

The training methodology is meant for any person for whom dance offers a pathway to experience their inherent spiritual nature.

The training methodology
will help dancers in three ways:

01

Engage with relevant, bold, and meaningful narratives by supporting them with yogic tools of visualization ( Bhavana ) and meditation ( Dhyana)

02

Educate them in empowering performance by connecting the body with the mind and providing anatomical understanding in Asana practice.

03

Elevate their practice by giving them a deeper understanding of the subtle body and the tools for emotional grounding so they experience the joy and stillness that radiates from within as their true, authentic Self.
